AHU Selection Software Compared (2026): The Independent Platforms

AHU selection softwarecomparison

If you manufacture air handling units, the first thing to get straight is a distinction most "best of" lists miss: there are two very different categories of AHU software, and they solve different problems.

  • Vendor-native selectors — a manufacturer's own tool that selects that manufacturer's units. Swegon AHU Design selects Swegon units; TANGRA's tool selects TANGRA units. Excellent if you buy from them, irrelevant if you build your own AHUs.
  • Independent selection platforms — software licensed to many manufacturers, letting each configure its own units from third-party components. This is the category AirSelect3D competes in, alongside AHU Selection (ahuselection.com), airCalc++, Dogmatik AHU.SELECTOR, Kinetix Air and ALTEC.

This comparison is about the second group — written by the AirSelect3D team, so read our column knowing the source and verify every competitor claim on their own pages (linked at the end).

The honest landscape

AHU Selection (ahuselection.com) is the established leader of this niche. Its own site cites 90+ integrated manufacturers, 25+ Eurovent-certified component brands, 2,500+ users across 80+ clients in 20 countries, 2D/3D drawings with BIM/IFC export, and ErP compliance. If you're evaluating independent platforms, it's the incumbent to benchmark against — and any newcomer, ours included, should be measured honestly against that track record.

airCalc++ is the other long-standing incumbent — an independent "design, selection and production" software licensed to many AHU manufacturers (specialist implementers like Dogmatik have worked with it for over a decade). It carries deep European compliance heritage. Public technical detail is thinner online, so confirm current specifics with the provider.

Dogmatik AHU.SELECTOR, Kinetix Air and ALTEC round out the field — Dogmatik web-based with WebGL 2D/3D and ErP; Kinetix a North-American cloud platform leading on AI automation across 150+ (largely US) manufacturers, without stated Eurovent/ErP; ALTEC a desktop tool with 3D live-view.

Where AirSelect3D fits

We're the new entrant, so here's the honest pitch: AirSelect3D isn't trying to out-catalogue a platform with 90+ manufacturers on day one. Its wedge is how you work and what compliance you see while you work:

  • The 3D canvas is the design surface, not a viewer. You drag modules onto the casing, they snap to the airflow centreline, and dimensions plus results recompute as you move them — you design in 3D rather than generating a 3D view of a form-based result.
  • Compliance updates on every edit. The Eurovent ECP-05-2026 energy class — separate winter and summer fs-Pref ratios — plus the ErP verdict and SFP to EN 16798 recompute live, so a non-compliant configuration flags before it reaches a customer.
  • Every number is source-tagged. Each result row shows whether it came from the manufacturer's own engine or a catalogue — provenance you can hand to an auditor.

How to choose

Don't choose from a feature grid — choose from a timed, side-by-side demo on your real unit. Run one complete selection on each shortlisted tool (template → operating point → component picks → compliance verdict → exported dossier) and watch three things: does the 3D let you design or only view; does the Eurovent/ErP verdict update as you edit or only at print; and can you trace every performance number to its source. Then pick on what your engineers actually felt.

Run that test on AirSelect3D and hold every platform to the same clock. New to the category? Start with our 2026 buyer's checklist.
